“I’ve long recognized the unique talent of George Crump to relay important cultural messages about the Black experience through his paintings; so when the New York Times was interviewing me and asked which artists in my collection I would recommend people look at I said George Crump.”
Opening Night Artist Talk July 9, 2021 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Meet Mr. Crump at Faié Afrikan Art Gallery for an intriguing discussion about his methods and how best to understanding the meaning behind The Art.
George Crump the Artist
The Chicago-based artist known as George Crump spent the majority of his life successfully developing a unified body of work evoking conversation between his art and collectors. George’s style is as unique as his signature bald characters who sit at the intersection of reality and surrealism.
George developed his focus on the sensual nature of art, aiming to evoke conversations on canvas. Like many visual artists, George “cannot recall a time when he was not attempting to converse through drawing, coloring or making things that spoke for [him].” It is through these powerful conversations that collectors across the nation are allured to his work.
George believes the rules of his art discipline must be well understood to be challenged. [He] knows "some rules don't always fit with what [he] has to say." So, he often applies this principle to the strengths of his medium by revealing complementary colors to illustrate each narrative on canvas.
Notably, his application is universal and honest. So much so, his strong emotional connection to his paintings open up to a variety of rich interpretations.
